It has been a very busy term so far in 6S. Earlier in the term, all of year 6 worked with Chappie Shane to develop their interpersonal skills before they headed to camp. Although our trip to Brisbane was cancelled these newly honed skills have already been applied at school and will again be used, and further developed, during our up and coming awesome adventure to Elanda Eco Camp in Term 4.
Team building activities with Chappie Shane include: push carts, group balancing and movement activities, team skipping challenges and a mystery maze that students had to find their way through by working collaboratively. This was an excellent opportunity to develop skills such as team work, turn taking, use of effective and positive communication, application of cooperation and leadership strategies.
In 6S Maths, students have been developing their understanding of number. This has included the properties of numbers including square, triangular, composite and prime. Additionally, students have been extending their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages.
6S students have been using lots of engaging ways to increase their understanding of percentages, in particular, using technology to help them develop and demonstrate their understanding in many and varied ways. For example, students used percentages to create unique visual designs, as well as devising their own school layout based on these concepts.
These amazing mathematicians also had the opportunity to become virtual millionaires, using an online learning tool. Quite a number of them made it to their first million and then worked towards their second million! Thankfully, there wasn’t an actual pay out! Mrs Stocks sighed with relief!
