The Special Education Program at Childers State School is modelled on the ‘HUB’ concept providing support services for students attending Childers State School and schools in the northern hub: Cordalba, Booyal and Goodwood State Schools; Biggenden State School and western hub: Dallarnil, Degilbo and Coalstoun Lakes State Schools and Isis District State High School.   All students with a disability are supported in state schools.
The Rainbow Room, located in Block 5, is the base for our Special Education Program at the school and can be accessed by all students. The unit is staffed by three special education teachers and three special education teacher aides. Extra staff are employed when required. The HOSES (Head of Special Education Services) is based at Isis District State High School.
A wide range of support services to assist you with information, programs and processes about students with disabilities is available at the school: students experience quality participation and enhanced learning opportunities to achieve the best possible educational outcomes.
·         The Education Adjustment Program (EAP) is a system identifying and responding to the educational needs of students with disabilities. It is used to record the education adjustments that are being made to assist students with disabilities in accessing curriculum, achieving curriculum outcomes and participating in school life. All students with a verified diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder, hearing impairment, intellectual impairment, physical impairment, speech-language impairment, vision impairment or a combination of these have an EAP Profile.
·         In addition, each student has an IEP (Individual Education Plan) which, while reflecting the disability and focusing on specific disability areas to be addressed over a six to twelve month timeframe, is connected with academic content standards.
Our students with disabilities work towards the same state standards as their peer cohort.

The school has a commitment to inclusive education and enhances inclusive education practices by:
·                 Fostering a learning community which supports students and their families. An ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) Parent Support Group holds meetings on a monthly basis in the Rainbow Room.
·                 Delivering specialist designed programs for specific disability areas. Some students participate in Gross /Fine Motor programs and Speech Language programs which are collaboratively developed with occupational therapists, physiotherapists and Speech Language Pathologists. Other programs explicit to the student’s needs include literacy, numeracy, Social Skills, Sensori-motor Programs, Communication, Personal Care and Personal Development.
·                 Supporting specialist staff who work with students with disabilities. Our Special Education teachers and teacher aides attend Professional Development workshops to enhance their knowledge and skills.
